What is Mental Health?

The month of May has been Mental Health Awareness month in the United States since 1949. The National Alliance of Mental Illness (NAMI) spends the month joining forces with other initiatives to raise awareness about mental health. NAMI’s motto for the month is: 

You are not alone. Now more than ever, we need to find ways to stay connected with our community. No one should feel alone or without information, support and help they need. 

The CDC has also made it a mission of theirs to raise awareness about mental health during the Covid-19 pandemic stating, “Learning to cope with stress in a healthy way will make you, the people you care about, and those around you become more resilient.” Understanding how to cope and process stress during the pandemic has proven to be exceptionally important. 

Mental health is a topic that is widely misunderstood and misrepresented. It is important to have a full understanding of what mental health encapsulates, after all 1 in 5 adults live with mental illness. It is more common than one would think. According to WHO, mental health is: 

a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity… Mental health is a state of well-being in which an individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and is able to make a contribution to his or her community.

NAMI indicates that millions of Americans live with mental illness, both before and during the pandemic. Even more frighteningly, less than 50% of those who lived with a mental illness received or sought treatment in 2019. As WHO specified, there is no health without mental health. Taking care of mental health is just as important as staying in shape, eating right, taking a vitamin, or doing anything else to take care of your physical health. The two go hand-in-hand. 

There are many different ways to take care and address your mental health. WHO lays out a few basic practices you can implement to help your mental health. These include taking a break from the news and social media, taking care of your physical health, and allowing yourself to take a breath to do something just for yourself.
